Grant “The Prophet” Dawson, born (February 20th, 1994) in Cambria, Wisconsin, moved with his family to Nebraska and grew up in Stromsburg, a small town 100 miles west of Omaha.
Dawson acquired his start in mixed martial arts by way of wrestling in high school (40-8 senior season). He admits that he was looking for something more after enduring relentless bullying by upper classmen. Dawson says, “I remember the first time I saw a UFC fight, I was like, this is it! This is what I have been looking for.” Dawson started competing in MMA while still in high school and has not looked back. He trains seven days a week without fail. Dawson considers himself a wrestler/grappler. He has won all of his fights by way of submission. Dawson says, “I train in boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai but I am a wrestler. If I won all of my fights with a submission I would be happy. I don’t need to knock people out to win.” He has trained with “No Quarter Given” in York, NE and “Premier Combat” in Omaha, NE but he now works out almost exclusively with “Team Viper” in Lincoln, NE and his mentors are Jordan Johnson, Robert Rojas and Jeff Alexander.
Dawson considers his most impressive victory to be his win over Justin Weaver for the DC lightweight title belt. “Justin and I go back a long way. He was my first fight and my last fight as an amateur,” says Dawson. Dawson humbly admits that he does not know how he will do as a pro but he is determined to make a mark. He considers Dakota Cochrane and Robert Rojas to be the pinnacle of the outside-the-UFC competition. “If I fought one of those guys now I would expect to learn a lot and I would be happy to gain respect. “I think what will put me on the map nationally, is a win over someone with a great record like Dakota,” says Dawson.
Dawson became a member of the MMA Futures Grey Hat Team after defeating Justin Weaver. Dawson Says, “I was jealous about Weaver getting the Grey Hat and my friend Dwight, (Joseph) had one too, I was like how come I don’t have one of those, then I beat Weaver and I now ‘I’ am a Grey Hat!” MMA Futures is proud to have Grant Dawson represent our brand as he makes his transition from amateur to professional. “I love what MMA Futures is doing for me to help get my name out there. MMA is my life right now,” says Dawson in response to being asked if he has any outside projects. He is focused on training seven days a week in preparation for his next fight. Dawson is passionate about the MMA Futures anti-bullying campaign. “I think it is my responsibility as a human being to defend those that can’t defend themselves,” says Dawson. Dawson’s family is very supportive of his career choice and has never missed a fight. “And even those bullies that I had back in high school are now my fans.”
What people may not know about Grant is that he is a huge Star Wars fan. “Yeah, I’m a huge Star Wars geek. It’s not like I try to hide it but it just doesn’t come up in my everyday MMA life.” When asked to sum up his life right now in one word, Grant says, “blessed.” He is a blessed and gifted young man and MMA Futures is very proud to have Grant as part of our team and we look forward to bigger and better things in his future.
