Janie “The Gun Show” Konyek, born (December, 28th, 1991) in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up all over the Midwest including; Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska.
Janie started her MMA training at Title Boxing Club in Omaha, Nebraska. “I was a trainer at title when I was introduced to Brian Houston and Grover Wiley and I was told by others, that I looked up to, that I should be a fighter so I started training at Premier Combat Center,” says Konyek. Ryan Jensen (UFC) set up a 6 day per week training regimen for Konyek, which includes Muay Thai, boxing and Jiu Jitsu. “I train six days a week really intense some days and a little lighter others,” says Konyek. Konyek considers Anthony Smith (UFC, Bellator) and Terrence Crawford (WBO Lightweight Champion) as her mentors. “I really look up to Anthony, he has really helped me and I appreciate all the advice and encouragement he has given me. But when it comes to boxing, Terrence has really helped me make my stand up that much better,” says Konyek.
Konyek considers her debut fight against Jori Waln to be her most impressive victory thus far in her career. “I didn’t think I was going to win, I was a little beat up but I dug deep and I feel like I just wanted it more that she did and I got the win,” says Konyek. When asked to rank herself Konyek says, “I don’t know how I would rank myself nationally but I beat out the top 145’r in Nebraska so locally I think I’m right up there. But I would say nationally I’m in the middle somewhere.” Konyek considers Cristiane Justino to be the best fighter out there right now at 145. Konyek humbly admits that she is not even close to that level yet in her career but says, “I think it’s going to take time and hard work for me to get to that level but I am willing to put the time in and I have the best mentors, coaches and teammates to help me get there. I’ve only been at this for 1 year, It is just a matter of time.”
Konyek is currently serving in the U.S. armed forces and is pursuing a degree in sports science. When asked about how she feels about the MMA Futures Grey Hat program Konyek says, “It is a great group of athletes, it’s a great way to meet people and learn about other up and coming fighters. I like feeling like part of a team outside of the team that I train with.” Konyek also works with the Special Olympics to give back to the community. “I try to do all I can to help out other people,” says Konyek. When asked what is one thing most people don’t know about you, Konyek says, “Well, I have webbed toes.”
Konyek’s family is mixed on their reaction to her choice to compete in MMA. “My dad’s side of the family likes that I compete but they don’t like seeing me get beat up. My mom’s side of the family doesn’t like it that much,” says Konyek. In Lake Andes, South Dakota, where Janie Konyek graduated from high school, they support her and watch all of her fights online at MMAFutures.com. When asked to describe her life right now, in one word, Konyek says, “Awesome.” She likes to think that she is making the most of every moment right now and doing exactly what she is passionate about doing. We agree, we are very proud to have Janie Konyek represent the MMA Futures Brand and we are excited to see what is coming in her future.
