Kassius “Killa” Kayne, born (August 29th, 1986) in Denver, Colorado, he moved with his family to Minneapolis, Minnesota then to Winside, Nebraska, a small town (population 450) 50 miles Northwest of Omaha.
Kayne began his MMA instruction after a four-year high school career in wrestling in which his team was runner up or state champion all four years. Kayne states that his personal best was state runner up during his senior year. Kayne trains primarily in Muay Thai with his coach and mentor Kurt “The Dragon” Podany (former world champion). He also trains in Jiu Jitsu at Premier Combat Center with UFC veteran Ryan Jensen. Kayne says that he tries to emulate Buakaw Banchamek and Ramon Decker with his stand up style. “I like that ‘in-your-face’ power that those guys show,” says Kayne. Kayne also talks about his gym and how it is a source of advice and wisdom. “I talk to all the guys, guys like Anthony Smith (UFC, Bellator), Ryan and Kurt. Those guys and the other guys I train with really help guide the direction I need to take at this point in my career. It’s like another family at Premier.” Kayne trains in strength and conditioning at 5:30 am 3 days a week and in Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu 5 days a week and Saturday morning at Premier Combat Center. Kayne held the DC welterweight belt and runner up at the Muay Thai national tournament 2 years in a row as an amateur and is undefeated thus far in his professional career.
Kayne does not recall any of his fights standing out as impressive in his mind. “I think all of my victories have some parts that are impressive and some parts I need to work on. I just want to get better.” When asked to rank himself nationally, in his weight class he says, “I think I am in the top 10 for sure, I am up to fight whomever. I like my chances in every fight I take.” Kayne is not familiar with the top competition but remembers, “Johnny Hendricks is champ, and he is the guy to shoot for but gotta look at GSP, Matt Hughes and even Miletich. Those guys held that belt for a while. That is where I want to be.” Kayne states that he likes to stand up with opponents and feels he can stand up with anyone. “I think I need to take a belt or two and put together some wins and I will get that call,” says Kayne.
Kayne says that when he is not training he is an outdoors person who enjoys water sports and skate boarding, When asked about the Grey Hat Program Kayne says, “I like the support and the recognition I get from MMA Futures, I feel like it’s kind of an unspoken club that has my back when I need them. I appreciate all you guys do for me.” Kayne is an active part of the Grey Hat anti-bullying campaign and is involved in the Liberia aid fund that fellow Grey Hat Dwight Joseph has started. One thing that most people don’t know about Kassius is that he plays the tuba.
“My Family didn’t like that I was fighting at first,” says Kayne. He received calls from his uncle warning him that he could become paralyzed or worse. Kayne says, “I don’t care, I’m not doing it for the money, I just want to compete. After that they saw how passionate I am about it and then they started to support me more and more.” When asked to describe his life right now, in one word, Kayne says, “Crazy.” Crazy by Kassius Kayne’s definition is exciting and moving fast, just like his career. MMA Futures is proud to have a great fighter like Kassius Kayne represent our brand. We look to see him moving to the next level very “crazy-fast!”
